Ancient Chain Making Workshop

Chinese ancient chains made of precious metals are beautifully produced, but researches on their techniques are rare. The research "Ancient Chinese Gold Techniques" is a collaborative project of Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Master Studio of Chow Tai Fook and other institutions, for the first time to use interdisciplinary methods to reconstruct several major ancient techniques and to rebuild their history. 

The workshop, which is the deliverable of parts of the research project, is divided into two sections. It begins with a brief lecture by Dr. Sam Tong, Postdoctoral Fellow of the Art Museum, on the techniques of precious metal chain making in ancient China and their cultural exchanges with other regions in Eurasian, followed by a demonstration by Mr. Andy Tsang, an expert of jewelry production at Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Co., Ltd. Participants are expected to finish a silver bracelet in ancient method under the instruction of Mr. Tsang.

Speaker & Demonstrator:

Dr. Sam Tong
Sam is responsible for research and exhibition curatorial projects at the Art Museum after graduated from CUHK with a doctoral degree in Art History. He has been working on the research project “Ancient Chinese gold techniques” as Postdoctoral Fellow since 2014. His recent publications include “‘Loop in loop’ and ‘single wire braiding’: techniques for making precious metal chains in ancient China,’” Ancient Chinese Gold Techniques and etc. 
 
Mr. Andy Tsang
Andy joined Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Co., Ltd. in 1994 as an apprentice while studying jewellery design at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education. Now he is a professional jeweller with more than 20 years of experience and is responsible for the research and development of jewellery products.
