Yuan Blue and White: New Discoveries from Jingdezhen
Exhibition Period: From 21 November 2025 to 29 March 2026
Venue: Harold and Christina Lee Gallery, Lo Kwee Seong Pavilion, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Jointly organized by the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Institute, this exhibition focuses on Yuan blue-and-white porcelain and highlights the archaeological discoveries from Jingdezhen over the years, including the most recently unearthed ceramic specimens from 2023 and 2024, supplemented by collections from the Art Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The exhibition aims to explore the rich artistic and cultural exchanges across Eurasia and the maritime routes during the Mongol-Yuan period, helping the audience to understand the flourishing development of Yuan dynasty handicraft industries and the background behind the emergence of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain. Using this type of globally influential Chinese porcelain as an entry point, the exhibition showcases one aspect of ancient China’s cultural exchange with world civilizations and China’s unique contribution to world history and culture through its ceramics.

The exhibition is divided into three sections: “Winds from the Steppe: Development of Yuan Dynasty Ceramics”, “Exchange and Integration: Production and Use of Yuan Blue-and-White Porcelain”, and “Global Convergence: Overseas Consumption and Global Influence of Yuan Blue-and-White Porcelain”. These sections guide the audience through a progressive understanding of Yuan dynasty history, culture, and ceramic achievements, explaining the context of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain’s emergence, its production in Jingdezhen, the technical and aesthetic exchanges in its design and manufacture, and the diversity of its uses and functions in different settings. The audience also discovers the overseas market of Yuan blue-and-white porcelain through prosperous maritime trade, appreciating the diversity of its overseas consumer groups, its unique cultural inclusivity, and its global influence.
