About the Programme
The Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Art Museum), in collaboration with Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group and various institutions, has launched the research project Ancient Chinese Gold Techniques. This interdisciplinary project integrates perspectives from art history, archaeology, scientific analysis, and experimental reconstruction to restore ancient craftsmanship and trace the historical development of Chinese goldsmiths. The project is fully sponsored by Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group.

The Student Goldsmith STEAM Maker Programme transforms the academic outcome of Phases I and II of the research into a comprehensive school-based educational initiative on gold craftsmanship. Planned by the Art Museum, with curriculum development partners Chun Tian Hua Hua Foundation Ltd. and HHCKLA Buddhist Wisdom Primary School, the programme includes – (1) Curriculum materials for Chinese Language, Science, and Visual Arts; (2) Teacher co-planning workshops; (3) Campus Exhibition and; (4) School-based student workshops led by CUHK Art Museum Ambassadors.

The programme aims to introduce students to the cultural significance and scientific properties of gold, provide first-hand experience in making gold chains with traditional methods, and nurture perseverance and craftsmanship. Through this process, students gain appreciation of the traditional cultural values and auspicious meanings associated with gold in Chinese artefacts.
