Artist-in-Residence Programme 2026
We are deeply honored to welcome renowned contemporary ceramic artist Gao Zhenyu as our artist-in-residence. Focusing on the exploration and practice of zisha art, he will engage in various forms of creation, exchange, and sharing at the Museum.
During the programme, the Museum will present a series of activities related to zisha art, including masterclasses, thematic lectures, and displays of works, allowing the public to gain insight into the fundamentals of ceramics and the rich heritage of zisha art from different perspectives.
About the Artist
Gao Zhenyu was born in 1964 into a family of ceramic artisans in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, the historic birthplace of zisha ware. From an early age he studied traditional zisha techniques under Gu Jingzhou, one of the great masters of twentieth-century Yixing pottery, beginning in 1982, and he graduated from the Department of Arts and Crafts at Nanjing University of the Arts in 1989. In 1993, Gao received a master’s degree at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. In the same year, he joined the Chinese National Academy of Arts, where he founded the Ceramics Creation and Research Studio, and retired from the institution in 2024. He is currently a retired Research Fellow of the Chinese National Academy of Arts. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and Musashino Art University, and as a juror for ceramics at the National Art Museum of China, among other roles.
Gao has devoted himself to the research and creation of traditional Yixing zisha art. His works inherit classical zisha techniques while emphasizing the subtle quality of handcraftsmanship, and they incorporate cultural references from bronze vessels and ancient ceramics to form a personal style that combines traditional depth with contemporary expression. He is best known for series such as “Pure,” “Quiet,” “Clear,” “Awakening,” and “Childlike,” through which he explores the relationship between traditional craft and modern life, revealing the primal vitality of clay itself.
Over the years, Gao’s works have been widely exhibited and collected by art institutions and private collectors in China and abroad, including the National Museum of China, the National Art Museum of China, the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum in Japan, Manpuku-ji Temple in Kyoto, the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware in Hong Kong, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in the United Kingdom.
